While there is slow but steady progress in gender diversity in technology, there is still much room for improvement. A 2022 Deloitte report highlights that female representation in large tech organisations stands at 33%, a slight increase from 31% in 2019.
According to Invest Europe, this figure sees a small improvement in European Private Equity and Venture Capital-backed portfolio companies, with women constituting 37% of the workforce. An increase of 3% since 2021. Yet, at board level, that figure drops to just 26%.
The root causes of gender disparity appear to originate at the early stages of education and career choices. Data from the European Commission reveals that while women make up 51% of the EU population, they only represent one in three STEM graduates and one in five ICT specialists. A statistic that has seen little change since 2013.
According to a PWC report, only 3% of women select technology as their first choice for a career path.
A concerning trend, highlighted in a US-focused Accenture study, reveals that a staggering 50% of women in technology consider leaving their jobs by the age of 35. This is largely due to poor company culture.
The solutions are wide ranging. At an early stage encouraging girls and young women to study STEM related subjects and consider a career in technology is key. Having more female role models in technology is crucial.
Organisations need to address these challenges to attract and retain a more diverse workforce. The solution here lies in rigorously promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion throughout the hiring process and beyond. Cultivating a positive business culture is critical.
